Cripple Creek hadn’t been too bad, Lenore decided as they drove away around five o’clock that afternoon. Their clothes were clean and neatly folded in a basket in the trunk, which was good. The children had a couple of little bits of turquoise in their pockets. And the train ride had hit just the right happy combination of scary and informative to make all of them content. Quite frankly, the rest of them owed her their lives, not that they would ever admit it. She’d kept that thing on the side of the mountain by dint of sheer concentration and willpower. It wouldn’t have dared fall, not with the way she’d prayed the whole time. It had clung to the side of that mountain like a good little train should, and she, for one, was grateful.

“You sure you want to try a different way back?” she asked as they left Cripple Creek behind.

“You saw the map,” Paul said as he watched the road in front of him. “This is a lot shorter. I can’t think why the guy at the campground told us to go the other way. It’s obviously a much longer route.”

Spoken like a true born-and-raised Midwesterner.

Following the route they’d traced on the road map and six miles out of Cripple Creek, they drove through Victor, another out-of-the-way and even smaller town currently living on past golden glories. Several long, tortuous miles later, the road turned to dirt.

“Paul, the sign says Proceed At Your Own Risk.”

“I see it,” he grunted, slowing down even further. “I see it.”

“Maybe we should turn back.”

“It’s already six-thirty. We’ve been driving for quite a while. That’s a lot of backtracking to do and I want to reach the campground before it grows much darker. We can’t have that much farther to go. How bad can it get?”

Call it female intuition, but somehow Lenore just knew they were about to find out.
